Want lasting joy?

Tired of life pushing you around? Sick of panic attacks or feeling depressed over the past or anxious about your future?

Are you tossed about by fleeting feelings? Feeling happy. Feeling sad. Feeling playful. Feeling scared. Feeling crazy. Feeling worried. Feeling alive. Feeling flat. Feeling tingly.

You want to feel good. And you want it to last – but how do you get to this?

There’s two tips I offer today.

1. Living one-day-at-a-time
2. JOY

Let’s explore them:-

1. As limited human beings we only have the capacity to live one day at a time. We are not omnipresent – we can’t be everywhere. We can only be in the here-and-now. That’s our limitation AND our blessing!

β€œStop being worried or anxious or perpetually uneasy and distracted about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, as to what you will wear.
Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow seed nor gather, and yet your Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?

Who of you by worrying can add one hour to the length of your life?

And why are you worried about clothes? See how the lilies and wildflowers of the field grow; they do not labour nor do they spin wool to make clothing, yet not even Solomon in all his glory and splendor dressed himself like one of these.
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is cut, will He not much more clothe you?

Therefore do not worry or be anxious.
Do not worry for your Father knows what you need.

Instead. Seek righteousness [God’s way of being rightβ€”the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.

Do do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

That’s from the Bible – a great place to learn how to live free of worry.

Take one day at a time. Take one moment at a time. Live in the present. Savour it.

Sounds simple (because it is) – smell a flower; watch a bug on the ground or a bee or butterfly; taste your food – one mouthful at a time; hug a friend; laugh at something.

These simple things are life-savers. They still your mind and keep you in the present.

2. JOY is something planted deep within. Not circumstantial to what happens TO us. It’s a fruit planted and growing within everyone as a consequence of their love for God. It can’t be uprooted. It is part of our dna.

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness
gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
That’s the Bible again.

Unlike happiness, which comes and goes, joy is deep and lasting. It isn’t flimsy and easily lost. It’s actually a supernatural gift. Powerful against wrong-thinking.

When our mind sets off on some loopy journey of it’s own, we who have the power of God within us, also therefore, have the power and the authority and the supernatural strength to reign it in. To pull it back into line with the joy within us.

Have you received that joy and are you using it?

"God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but He has given us a spirit of power and of love and of sound judgment and a SOUND MIND and personal discipline – abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control."
That’s the Bible again.

It is crucial we KNOW WHO WE ARE.
We are not weaklings tossed about by life. You are a powerful, incredible, amazing work of art designed to live joyfully one-day-at-a-time.

You’re not a victim. That mindset was broken. You who have responded to God’s love are a new creation.

"This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new creation. The old has gone. The new has come!"
That’s the Truth again, God’s promise.

That’s who you are. Let’s live it!
